Yufuin Travel Guide — A Quiet Onsen Basin of 10,000 Residents

This time we headed out to Yufuin in Oita Prefecture, one of Kyushu’s most beloved onsen towns.
Yufuin sits in a small mountain basin with a population of only about 10,000, yet welcomes over 4 million visitors every year. From Fukuoka Airport it is roughly 1 hour 40 minutes by rental car, and the town center itself is easily covered on a bicycle in a single loop.
Our plan was simple: drive up to a mountaintop viewpoint, cycle a lap around town, and end the day soaking in an onsen ryokan. The route below is what worked, and it should map cleanly onto any first Kyushu trip.

What kind of town is Yufuin?
Yufuin is a basin-shaped onsen town in Yufu City (由布市), Oita Prefecture. The city as a whole has about 33,500 residents, and Yufuin district itself holds just around 10,559 people.
In 2024, however, Yufu City recorded 4,297,903 visitors — an extraordinarily high tourist-to-resident ratio.
The numbers make it sound overwhelming, but the reality on the ground is different. Day-trippers concentrate on Yunotsubo Street and Lake Kinrin-ko between roughly noon and 4 p.m., and once that window passes, the town becomes remarkably quiet again.
Yufuin is busy at midday, but the basin’s signature stillness returns in the early morning and after sunset.
Late September on the ground — what to wear
We visited in late September. It rained the day we arrived, which actually worked in our favor — the basin filled with soft, humid air and a thin veil of mist wrapped the surrounding ridges.
During the daytime, short sleeves and shorts were comfortable. Strolling Yunotsubo Street or biking to Kinrin-ko, summer clothing was fine — just a small umbrella or a light rain shell in your bag was enough to cover the occasional shower.
After sunset, however, the temperature dropped noticeably. Short sleeves alone felt a little chilly on evening walks, especially with wind coming down from the mountains. A light windbreaker tucked into your daypack makes the walk between town and ryokan much more pleasant.
Put simply, late-September Yufuin is “summer by day, early autumn by evening.” Adding one thin outer layer to your daytime outfit is enough to stay comfortable all day.

Where to stay — nearly every ryokan has its own onsen
If we had to describe Yufuin in one sentence, it would be this: “the town where almost every place you sleep comes with a hot-spring bath.”
The Yufuin Ryokan Association officially states that “thanks to the abundant hot-spring volume, most ryokan are equipped with open-air baths.” A quick look at any booking site confirms it — the overwhelming majority of properties offer either a large communal bath or an in-room open-air bath.
There are broadly two styles of stay.
The first is a ryokan with large communal and open-air baths — perfect if you enjoy moving between multiple tubs during your stay.
The second is a ryokan with a private open-air bath in your room — ideal for couples and families who prefer bathing on their own schedule, in complete privacy.
Most Yufuin ryokan operate on a 1-night, 2-meal (dinner + breakfast) plan. This system means you don’t need to plan dinner separately — you can spend the entire evening between your bath and your tatami room without worrying about where to eat.
One lap by bike — the official rental next to Yufuin Station
Yufuin is the perfect scale for exploring by bicycle. The Yufuin Tourist Information Center (YUFUiNFO), right next to Yufuin Station, runs the official rental service. Reservations are not accepted — it is first-come, first-served on the day.

Recommended route: from Yufuin Station, ride down Yunotsubo Street to Lake Kinrin-ko. Walking from the station to Kinrin-ko takes about 20 minutes, but by bike it is just 7–10 minutes. Kinrin-ko itself takes about 15 minutes to walk around.
A relaxed loop of Yufuin Station → Yunotsubo Street → Kinrin-ko → the main ryokan quarter takes roughly 2 hours 30 minutes by bicycle. A 2-hour rental is enough to cover the highlights.
Restaurants close early — plan your evening around it
Here is the single piece of practical information most first-time visitors miss. Most restaurants in Yufuin close between 17:00 and 18:00.
Typical operating hours around town look like this:

- 10:30–18:30 (last order 17:30)
Only izakaya, café-bars, and ryokan-attached restaurants stay open into the night. From November through February, some places close 30 minutes to 1 hour earlier than usual.

The early-closing culture and the 1-night-2-meal ryokan system are two sides of the same coin. The town is essentially designed so you never have to wander in search of dinner.
Sagiridai — a mountaintop view just 10 minutes from town
Yufuin looks flat on a map, but drive up for just 10 minutes and the landscape transforms.
Sagiridai Viewpoint (狹霧台) sits at an altitude of about 680 m on the Yamanami Highway (Prefectural Route 11) heading toward Beppu. From Yufuin Station it is only 10–15 minutes by car.

The true face of Sagiridai is the morning mist. On autumn and winter mornings, fog fills the basin and the town appears to float above a sea of cloud — the very phenomenon that gave the viewpoint its name (Sagiri = “narrow mist”). Photographers should plan an early start at least once.
The viewpoint opens westward, so the sunset view is also outstanding. As the sun drops behind the Mt. Yufu ridge, the basin gradually falls into shadow. There are no dramatic city lights, but the soft, scattered glow of onsen inns lighting up in the darkness makes for beautiful photography.
If you miss the morning mist, an excellent backup is Jakoshi Viewpoint (蛇越), about 15 minutes by car from Yufuin Station toward Aso. It sits slightly west of Sagiridai and is well-known for morning mist and sea-of-clouds photography.

For pure viewpoint value, Sagiridai offers the best balance — plenty of parking, 24-hour access, and a wide-open panorama.

The itinerary above works especially well for three kinds of travelers.
First, visitors doing a Fukuoka Airport in-and-out rental-car loop through Kyushu. Yufuin sits about 1 hour 40 minutes from Fukuoka Airport and under an hour from Beppu and Oita City, making it an excellent hub for a Kyushu road trip.
Second, couples and families who want a full evening of onsen ryokan comfort. The 1-night-2-meal system lets you settle into your room and your bath without leaving the property.
Third, travelers who want to bike the town by day and catch mountaintop views at dawn and dusk. Combining a rental car with a bicycle is the fastest way to grasp the true scale of Yufuin.
