A Mt. Fuji road trip from Shizuoka Airport works best when you match the route to your flight times. Choose three days for Shizuoka and the coast, or allow four days to add Fujinomiya and Lake Kawaguchi with an overnight stay near the lake.
At GO!GO!TOUR, we suggest choosing your pick-up and return arrangements before filling the days with sightseeing. Start with our Shizuoka rental car search, then compare the plans available for your dates, luggage and preferred route.

A Mt. Fuji road trip from Shizuoka Airport — choose the coast or extend to the lakes
This route suits travelers arriving at Shizuoka Airport who want to combine viewpoints, short walks and places outside the city center. A car lets you carry luggage between hotels and adjust the order of stops when the weather changes. If your wider Japan trip already follows a railway route, compare that arrival option before choosing an airport purely for this itinerary.
The airport name does not mean you will arrive beside Lake Kawaguchi. Shizuoka’s coastal sights, Fujinomiya on the southern side of Mt. Fuji, and Lake Kawaguchi in Yamanashi are separate parts of the trip. Allow time for meals, parking and breaks as well as the drive shown on your map.
These are suggested self-drive itineraries, not packages with flights, hotels or attraction tickets included. They focus on viewing Mt. Fuji from surrounding destinations; they do not include a summit climb or a drive to a fifth station.
Should you choose three days or four?
| Trip length | Recommended focus |
|---|---|
| 3 days / 2 nights | Stay in Shizuoka for both nights. Combine Nihondaira and Miho no Matsubara, with a shorter arrival-day stop if time allows. |
| 4 days / 3 nights | Add Fujinomiya and an overnight stay near Lake Kawaguchi. Return toward Shizuoka before the final night, with Gotemba as an optional stop. |
A late arrival or early departure reduces your sightseeing time. Treat arrival and departure days as partial travel days, not two full sightseeing days. For families or anyone new to driving in Japan, a shorter list of stops leaves more room to settle in.
Check your driving documents before booking
Japan’s driving requirements depend on where your license was issued. An English-language home license alone is not enough for most overseas visitors. Check the applicable route with JAF’s official foreign-license guidance before reserving a vehicle.
For visitors using an International Driving Permit, Japan recognizes permits under the 1949 Geneva Convention, subject to the applicable validity and entry conditions. A permit bearing a different convention name should not be assumed valid. Holders of licenses issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan may instead use an eligible license with an authorized Japanese translation, subject to the relevant conditions.
Prepare your original documents, passport and any permit or translation required for your circumstances. Confirm the rental provider’s document requirements for every person who will drive. Arrange this before departure rather than hoping to resolve a missing document when collecting the car.
Choose a rental plan around your passengers and luggage
A compact car is a useful starting point for a couple traveling with modest luggage. For longer drives, compare seating comfort and luggage capacity as well as the headline price. A hybrid may be worth considering, but check the complete rental quote rather than assuming fuel savings will offset a higher hire price.
Families should compare larger cars and minivans using the number and size of their bags. A vehicle’s seat count is not its suitcase capacity. If you need child seats, ask how they affect the usable seats and luggage space, and confirm availability before booking.
Pick-up instructions, meeting points, shuttle arrangements and operating hours vary by provider and plan. Check the details of your selected rental car plan before booking. Confirm that its pick-up and return arrangements work with your flights, and follow the instructions in your booking confirmation.
When comparing plans, check the included insurance, excess or deductible, optional waivers and any non-operation charge conditions separately. Do not assume one provider’s coverage, payment methods or cancellation rules apply to another. Ask about accepted payment cards, additional drivers and language support if any of these affect your trip.
Enter your actual travel dates and planned rental times in the Shizuoka car rental search. A calendar-day label and a rental measured in hours may produce different totals.

Driving, tolls and navigation: prepare before setting off
Traffic keeps to the left in Japan. Take time to familiarize yourself with the vehicle while parked, especially if you normally drive on the right. Follow posted limits, wear seat belts and never drink and drive. Review JAF’s traffic rules before your trip.
For expressways, ask whether your plan offers an ETC card and how tolls will be settled. An ETC reader installed in the vehicle is not the same thing as having a usable card. NEXCO explains that ETC requires both the card and the in-vehicle equipment. Confirm any card rental charge separately from the road tolls.
Without working ETC, plan a route using suitable entrances and exits rather than following navigation into an ETC-only interchange. Smart interchanges require ETC. If unsure about a tollgate, follow its signs and staff instructions; do not reverse through a toll lane.
Save each attraction’s visitor parking area in your map app before driving. A pin for a waterfall, shrine or lakeshore may not be the entrance for vehicles. Check the route while parked, allow breaks, and confirm whether your accommodation offers parking and whether it costs extra.
Keep fuel, tolls and parking in a separate budget from the rental price. For winter or mountain-area travel, check the weather, road restrictions and the equipment needed for your route with the provider. Do not assume a vehicle comes with winter tires, or that clear weather near the coast describes conditions around the lake.
Which stops fit your route?
Nihondaira and Miho no Matsubara: coastal Shizuoka
Nihondaira Yume Terrace is a good choice for a broad view of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay when the weather cooperates. Pair it with Miho no Matsubara for a different setting: pine trees, the shore and a mountain view across the bay.
Plan these as a sightseeing day from Shizuoka, with time for lunch and walking. Check facility opening information before leaving, and choose the order around the day’s conditions. A viewpoint visit should not become a race between photo stops.

Fujinomiya: a shrine and waterfalls
Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha brings a cultural stop to the drive. Combine it with Shiraito Falls if your departure time and onward journey allow both.
The approach toward the lower waterfall viewing area includes steps, so consider everyone’s mobility and the weather. Check visitor access information rather than treating arrival at the car park as the end of the walk.
Lake Kawaguchi: an overnight extension
Lake Kawaguchi is in Yamanashi Prefecture. Oishi Park offers lakeside scenery with Mt. Fuji in the background when visible; flowers change with the season. An overnight stay near the lake gives you more flexibility than adding it to a tightly packed return drive from Shizuoka.
Book accommodation around the route you actually want to follow. If dinner is included, check its arrival deadline before adding another afternoon stop. You can enjoy the lakeshore without trying to visit every viewpoint around it.
Gotemba: optional shopping on the return leg
Gotemba Premium Outlets is an option for travelers who want shopping as part of the trip. Set a departure time before you begin, leaving room for the drive back toward Shizuoka and your hotel check-in.
If shopping is not a priority, leave it out. That time can become a slower lakeside morning, a longer lunch or a more relaxed return journey.
A relaxed 3-day itinerary from Shizuoka Airport
For two nights, we recommend using Shizuoka as your base. This keeps hotel changes to a minimum and concentrates the main sightseeing on one full day.
| Day | Suggested plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1: arrive and settle in | Collect your car according to your booking instructions, then head toward Shizuoka. With an early arrival, consider a short stop in the Shimada area. With a late arrival, prioritize hotel check-in and dinner. |
| Day 2: viewpoints and the coast | Visit Nihondaira and Miho no Matsubara, with time for a meal and a coastal walk. Stay in Shizuoka again. |
| Day 3: return and depart | Follow your plan’s fuel and return requirements. Add a short city stop only if your flight and rental return schedule leave enough time. |
If tea culture interests you, investigate a museum or tea experience around Shimada for your arrival day. Confirm the facility’s current schedule and any reservation requirement before committing. Keep it optional until you know how much time remains after collecting the car.

A 4-day itinerary with Fujinomiya and Lake Kawaguchi
This version adds a night near the lake and returns toward Shizuoka before departure day. It involves more driving and hotel changes, so shorten the sightseeing list if you are traveling with young children or prefer slower days.
| Day | Suggested plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1: Shizuoka | Collect the car and stay in Shizuoka. Visit Nihondaira only if your arrival leaves comfortable sightseeing time. |
| Day 2: Fujinomiya to the lake | Visit Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha and Shiraito Falls, then continue to accommodation near Lake Kawaguchi. Drop a stop if you leave late. |
| Day 3: lakeshore and return | Explore Oishi Park, then return toward Shizuoka. Include Gotemba shopping only if it fits your driving and hotel schedule. Stay somewhere convenient for the next day’s return arrangements. |
| Day 4: departure | Refuel as required and return the car following your selected plan’s instructions. Allow time for the onward journey to your flight. |

Use your actual hotels and travel date when checking each leg in a route planner. The sequences above are editorial suggestions, not timed driving schedules. Avoid adding Izu or Hakone simply because they appear nearby on a regional map.
Keep a weather alternative and a clear return plan
Mt. Fuji can be hidden by cloud even when a viewpoint is open. Build a trip you can enjoy without a clear mountain view: a shrine visit, a meal, a tea-related attraction or shopping can still give the day a purpose. Follow weather and access notices, and avoid making a long extra drive solely to chase a view.
Before your last day, confirm the required fuel level, acceptable refueling arrangements and any receipt requirement. Check the operating hours of the filling station you plan to use and save a backup. Do not assume a convenient station will be open when you need it.
Follow the provider’s return deadline and your airline’s check-in guidance, allowing time for inspection, payment and the transfer from the return location. If your flight changes, contact the provider through the method on your booking confirmation. A delayed or canceled flight does not automatically settle the rental booking.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with only my home-country license?
Do not assume so. Requirements depend on the issuing country and your circumstances. Check JAF’s country-specific guidance and confirm the original documents required by the rental provider before booking.
Does a car with an ETC reader include an ETC card?
Not necessarily. Confirm card availability, any rental fee and toll settlement with your selected plan. The reader alone is not enough to use ETC.
Can I fit Lake Kawaguchi into a three-day trip?
It depends on your flights, hotels and willingness to drive. For a more relaxed three-day trip, this guide recommends coastal Shizuoka. The four-day itinerary gives Lake Kawaguchi its own overnight stay.
Where do I collect the car, and what time is collection available?
Check your selected rental car plan and booking confirmation. Meeting points, pick-up instructions, shuttle arrangements and operating hours differ by provider and plan.
What car should four adults with luggage choose?
Compare luggage capacity as well as seats. Ask whether your actual bags will fit with all passenger seats in use; a larger car or minivan may suit your group better, but the vehicle details must confirm that.
Are winter tires included?
Do not assume they are. Tell the provider your intended route and travel dates, then confirm the available equipment and any additional charge. Check road conditions before entering mountain areas.
Plan your Shizuoka drive — leave room for the journey
Start with three decisions: your flight times, how far you want to drive, and where you will sleep. Choose the coastal route for a simpler stay, or add a night near Lake Kawaguchi when you have enough time for the longer loop.
Choose the rental plan that fits your route, then build sightseeing around its confirmed pick-up and return conditions.
