What Is Ocean Expo Park? — The Aquarium Is Only Part of It
Ocean Expo Park is a large national park built for the 1975 International Ocean Exposition. However, the Churaumi Aquarium is just the one ticketed building — most of the rest of the park is free and open to wander.

The aquarium and dolphin theater are at the northern, seaside end of a very large park. The closest lot is the “P7 North Gate.” Set your GPS to “Ocean Expo Park P7” (or the aquarium’s phone number, 0980-48-3748) so you don’t park a 15-minute walk away.
The park is big enough that walking from the car to the seaside and back can wear you out. The whale-shark-painted electric shuttle cart links the ticket gate, beach and main facilities for around ¥100 a ride — a lifesaver with small kids or on a hot day.
💡 Free Highlight 1 — Okichan Theater Dolphin Show
Down by the water, just below the aquarium, is Okichan Theater (オキちゃん劇場). You can watch a dolphin show with the open sea and Ie Island as the backdrop — for free. Shows run several times a day, about 20 minutes each, full of big jumps and tricks. It’s the most popular free attraction in the whole park.
It’s popular, so grab a seat 15–20 minutes early. In summer the sun is intense — bring a hat, water, and a fan. The nearby “Diving Show,” plus the manatee and turtle pools, are all an easy walk from here.

The Manatee Pool lets you meet endangered manatees through an underwater window. Watching them slowly munch floating cabbage is oddly mesmerizing, and kids love it. Being indoors, it’s also a welcome break from the heat or a passing shower — and it’s free.

At the Sea Turtle Pool you can look down on green and loggerhead turtles from above, then head to the basement window to see them swim past at eye level. Those emerald tanks with turtles gliding through make a great photo spot too — again, no ticket needed.

Near the show pool there’s also an underwater window for watching the dolphins. When one glides right up to the glass and seems to make eye contact, kids and adults gasp alike — and you can see it any time, not just during the show.
At the north end of the park is Emerald Beach, a man-made beach living up to its name. In summer you can swim for free (check the open season and designated swim zone). With Ie Island floating across the water, it’s one of the park’s best photo spots.
Around the Park — Food Trucks & Photo Ops
The central plaza has a cluster of food trucks and snack stands — pizza, hot dogs, and Okinawan treats for a quick, casual meal. Eating on the lawn with a sea view is a treat in itself, and whale- and turtle-shaped topiaries dotted around make fun photo props.
One practical note: the park is genuinely big, with gentle hills, stairs and escalators between the gate, seaside, beach and show pool. Therefore, with a stroller or wheelchair, lean on that shuttle cart.

If you do want to head indoors, the aquarium’s icon is the “Kuroshio Sea” main tank — whale sharks over 8 meters long and gliding manta rays behind a 60 cm-thick acrylic panel (whale-shark feeding commentary is usually twice a day, around 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM). - Bise Fukugi Tree Road — just 5 minutes away. A 250-year-old wind-break forest that forms a green tunnel; the area’s top photo walk.
- Neo Park Okinawa — free-flight aviary and Okinawa’s only mini-railway. ~30 min toward Nago.
- Nago Pineapple Park — auto-piloted carts through a pineapple field; very family-friendly.
