Ocean Expo Park Okinawa — The Free Dolphin Show, Manatees & Beach Around Churaumi Aquarium
Hello from GO!GO!TOUR — your English-friendly rental car and travel partner for exploring Ocean Expo Park Okinawa.
Say “northern Okinawa” and everyone thinks of the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. But here’s what most visitors don’t realize: the aquarium is just one paid building inside a huge public park called Ocean Expo Park (海洋博公園) — and the dolphin show, manatee and sea-turtle pools, and Emerald Beach are all completely free.
This guide is about exactly that — enjoying Ocean Expo Park without paying to go inside the aquarium. We didn’t buy an aquarium ticket this time, and honestly, the free attractions alone easily filled the better part of a day. (Ticket info is at the end if you do want to go in.)
One catch: the Motobu Peninsula has very thin public transport — about a 2-hour drive from Naha Airport — so a rental car is essentially the only comfortable way here. Lock yours in early with GO!GO!TOUR Okinawa Car Rental — English support and pickup at Naha Airport.
Inside: the free highlights (dolphin show, manatees, sea turtles, Emerald Beach), getting around the huge park, parking and photo spots, and how to pair it with Bise Fukugi and Neo Park — plus aquarium tickets and the “After-4pm” discount if you want to head indoors.
What Is Ocean Expo Park? — The Aquarium Is Only Part of It
Ocean Expo Park is a large national park built for the 1975 International Ocean Exposition. However, the Churaumi Aquarium is just the one ticketed building — most of the rest of the park is free and open to wander.
- 🐬 Okichan Theater (dolphin show) — free
- 🐋 Manatee Pool & Sea Turtle Pool — free
- 🏖 Emerald Beach — free (open for swimming in summer)
- 🌺 Tropical Dream Center, Oceanic Culture Museum, Native Okinawan Village — some paid, but the park is mostly lawns and sea views
In other words, even without an aquarium ticket, you can watch the dolphin show, meet the manatees and turtles, and hit the beach. For budget travelers or families with little kids, this “free version” is genuinely great value.
Getting There — ~2 Hours From Naha, Free Parking
Address: 424 Ishikawa, Motobu-cho, Kunigami-gun, Okinawa (Ocean Expo Park)
From Naha Airport: about 2 hours by car (~90 km) via the Okinawa Expressway, exiting at Kyoda IC
Parking: free at Ocean Expo Park (around 1,900 spaces)
The aquarium and dolphin theater are at the northern, seaside end of a very large park. The closest lot is the “P7 North Gate.” Set your GPS to “Ocean Expo Park P7” (or the aquarium’s phone number, 0980-48-3748) so you don’t park a 15-minute walk away.
The park is big enough that walking from the car to the seaside and back can wear you out. The whale-shark-painted electric shuttle cart links the ticket gate, beach and main facilities for around ¥100 a ride — a lifesaver with small kids or on a hot day.
💡 Free Highlight 1 — Okichan Theater Dolphin Show
Down by the water, just below the aquarium, is Okichan Theater (オキちゃん劇場). You can watch a dolphin show with the open sea and Ie Island as the backdrop — for free. Shows run several times a day, about 20 minutes each, full of big jumps and tricks. It’s the most popular free attraction in the whole park.
It’s popular, so grab a seat 15–20 minutes early. In summer the sun is intense — bring a hat, water, and a fan. The nearby “Diving Show,” plus the manatee and turtle pools, are all an easy walk from here.
💡 Free Highlight 2 — Manatee Pool
The Manatee Pool lets you meet endangered manatees through an underwater window. Watching them slowly munch floating cabbage is oddly mesmerizing, and kids love it. Being indoors, it’s also a welcome break from the heat or a passing shower — and it’s free.
💡 Free Highlight 3 — Sea Turtle Pool
At the Sea Turtle Pool you can look down on green and loggerhead turtles from above, then head to the basement window to see them swim past at eye level. Those emerald tanks with turtles gliding through make a great photo spot too — again, no ticket needed.
💡 Free Highlight 4 — Underwater Dolphins & Emerald Beach
Near the show pool there’s also an underwater window for watching the dolphins. When one glides right up to the glass and seems to make eye contact, kids and adults gasp alike — and you can see it any time, not just during the show.
At the north end of the park is Emerald Beach, a man-made beach living up to its name. In summer you can swim for free (check the open season and designated swim zone). With Ie Island floating across the water, it’s one of the park’s best photo spots.
Around the Park — Food Trucks & Photo Ops
The central plaza has a cluster of food trucks and snack stands — pizza, hot dogs, and Okinawan treats for a quick, casual meal. Eating on the lawn with a sea view is a treat in itself, and whale- and turtle-shaped topiaries dotted around make fun photo props.
One practical note: the park is genuinely big, with gentle hills, stairs and escalators between the gate, seaside, beach and show pool. Therefore, with a stroller or wheelchair, lean on that shuttle cart.
Want to Go Inside Churaumi Aquarium? Tickets & the “After-4pm” Deal
If you do want to head indoors, the aquarium’s icon is the “Kuroshio Sea” main tank — whale sharks over 8 meters long and gliding manta rays behind a 60 cm-thick acrylic panel (whale-shark feeding commentary is usually twice a day, around 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM). Budget about 1.5–2 hours indoors. For example, you can check current hours and ticket prices on the Churaumi Aquarium official website before you go.
| Ticket | Approx. Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ~¥2,180 | High-school student ~¥1,440 |
| Elementary / Junior-high | ~¥710 | Under 6 free |
| “After-4pm” ticket | Adult ~¥1,510 | Discounted entry after 4:00 PM |
Prices and hours change seasonally — always confirm on the official website before you go.
👉 Smart plan: free attractions in the morning, then enter after 4:00 PM on the discounted ticket. Pre-bought tickets from convenience stores or travel agencies can save a little and skip the counter line.
Build a Northern Okinawa Day Around the Park
Ocean Expo Park is the anchor of northern Okinawa sightseeing. Stack a few nearby spots and you’ve got a full, easy day:
- Bise Fukugi Tree Road — just 5 minutes away. A 250-year-old wind-break forest that forms a green tunnel; the area’s top photo walk.
- Neo Park Okinawa — free-flight aviary and Okinawa’s only mini-railway. ~30 min toward Nago.
- Nago Pineapple Park — auto-piloted carts through a pineapple field; very family-friendly.
- DINO Park & Okashi Goten Nago — life-sized dinosaurs in a subtropical forest, plus Okinawan sweets.
Suggested flow: morning at the free park attractions → food-truck lunch → optional aquarium after 4:00 PM → late-afternoon photo walk at Bise Fukugi. It all lines up naturally.
FAQ — Quick Answers Before You Go
Q1. Is Ocean Expo Park worth it without paying for the aquarium?
A. Absolutely. The dolphin show, manatee pool, sea-turtle pool and Emerald Beach are all free, and with the sea views, food trucks and photo spots, families can easily spend half a day — a great budget option.
Q2. How long should I plan for?
A. Just the free areas: about half a day. Add the aquarium (1.5–2 hours) and it’s a full day. Arriving in the morning gives you the most breathing room.
Q3. Is it stroller- and wheelchair-friendly?
A. The park is large and hilly, so use the shuttle cart between the parking lot and facilities. Stroller rentals are available, and the aquarium interior is barrier-free.
Q4. Do I really need a car?
A. Strongly recommended. Buses to the Motobu Peninsula are infrequent, so a rental car makes chaining the northern sights far easier. It’s about a 2-hour drive from Naha Airport.
Wrap-Up — A Full Day at Ocean Expo Park Okinawa, No Ticket Required
The best thing about Ocean Expo Park is its free attractions — the dolphin show, manatees, sea turtles and Emerald Beach. Even without stepping inside Churaumi Aquarium, you can have a full, satisfying day, especially with kids or on a budget.
Combine the park with Bise Fukugi, Neo Park and Pineapple Park for a northern Okinawa day — and if you want the whale sharks, add the aquarium on the “After-4pm” ticket.
