Rent a Tesla in Okinawa — Skip the gas station, pick up a fully charged Model 3 or Y at Naha

If you have driven a Tesla back home and you are wondering whether the same experience is possible on a small island in the East China Sea, the short answer is yes. Lightmarks EV Rental operates a Tesla-only rental fleet out of Naha, and GO!GO!TOUR handles the English-speaking booking side so you can lock in a car before you leave home.

This guide walks through what the rental actually costs, what you need to bring at the counter (there is one big paperwork trap for U.S. and Canadian drivers), how the airport pickup works, and how charging plays out on an island that just got its first Tesla Supercharger in February 2026.

Quick answers — the numbers you actually need

  • Vehicle: Tesla Model 3 or Model Y (2023 build, automatic, 5 seats). Model and color are assigned by the shop — you cannot pick.
  • Price on the featured K1215 plan: ¥15,000 / 24h (about $100), down from a ¥22,400 rack rate.
  • Charging: fully included. Car is handed over at 100% state of charge, and you don’t need to top up before returning.
  • Pickup point: Lightmarks EV Rental, 4-6-1 Kanagusuku, Naha (roughly 10 minutes from Naha Airport by free shuttle).
  • Documents required: three originals — Passport, International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention, paper booklet), and your home country driver’s license.
  • Payment: credit card, pre-paid at booking. No cash on-site.
  • Cancellation: free up to 7 days before pickup, then a step-up fee (20% / 30% / 100%).
  • Availability at time of writing: 1 car remaining on the K1215 plan (stock is tight — book early).

What makes Lightmarks work — full-charge hand-over via Tesla API

Lightmarks EV Rental runs a Tesla-only fleet in Okinawa and uses Tesla’s own vehicle API to manage charging and reservations remotely. That is why the operational promise here — hand-over at 100% charge, no need to refuel before return — actually holds up in practice.

The Naha branch runs 08:00–20:00, seven days a week, and pickup / return slots are booked in 30-minute increments.

Which plan to book — the three options on GO!GO!TOUR

GO!GO!TOUR lists three Lightmarks plans. All three include the same core benefits — instant confirmation, free airport shuttle, one child seat, Bluetooth, rear camera, non-smoking, glass roof, fewer than five years old — so the only real decision is price and conditions.

Plan Rate (24h) Positioning
Standard (plan 1135) ¥11,200 (~$75) Cheapest full-package rate
K1215 Special Discount ¥15,000 (~$100) Featured plan — Instagram hashtag condition applies
Off-Season (plan 1916) ¥15,680 (~$105) Newer-vehicle plan for low season

The K1215 plan is the one we walk through in detail below, because it is the plan that most English-speaking travelers end up booking through GO!GO!TOUR — the rate is transparent, and the “Instagram hashtag” condition is easy for most travelers to satisfy.

The Instagram condition, plain-English: to keep the K1215 rate, you agree to post a photo of the Tesla during your rental period with the tag #OkinawaTesla (Japanese version: #沖縄テスラ旅). If you’re already an Instagram user this costs you nothing. If you’re not, the Standard plan (¥11,200) is a better fit.

K1215 plan — what’s included, what’s not

Included in the ¥15,000 / 24h rate

  • All charging costs (hand-over at 100%, no top-up before return)
  • Unlimited third-party liability (personal and property)
  • Passenger injury cover up to ¥10 million
  • Personal injury cover up to ¥50 million
  • One child seat
  • Free airport shuttle (both directions)
  • In-car navigation (Japanese and Korean interface — see note below)

Optional add-ons (paid on-site)

Option Fee What it covers
CDW (collision damage waiver) ¥2,000 / 24h Waives self-pay deductible up to ¥100,000
NOC (non-operation charge waiver) ¥1,000 / 24h Waives ¥50,000 (drivable) / ¥100,000 (not drivable) charge if an accident sidelines the car
ETC toll card rental Pay on-site For expressway tolls
Wheel scratches, tire puncture Case-by-case Not covered by CDW

If you plan to drive the Okinawa Expressway or go beyond central Naha, take the CDW. ¥2,000 for a full day is cheap peace of mind on unfamiliar roads. NOC is smaller money and worth adding for the same reason.

The paperwork trap — read this before you leave home

Japan accepts International Driving Permits only in the 1949 Geneva Convention paper-booklet format. This matters more than most rental guides admit:

  • U.S. drivers: the AAA (or AATA) IDP is the correct one. Get it before you fly — Japan does not issue IDPs to short-term visitors.
  • Canadian drivers: the CAA IDP works.
  • U.K., Australia, most of the EU, Singapore: your standard IDP is Geneva Convention format — fine.
  • ⚠️ Korean drivers — important: the English-language back-side of your Korean license (the “English notation”) is not valid for driving in Japan. You must carry the physical booklet-style IDP from the police station.
  • Countries under Vienna Convention only (Switzerland, some others): your IDP may not be recognized. Check before booking — you may need a certified Japanese translation of your license instead.

At the Lightmarks counter you present all three originals: passport, IDP, and your home country driver’s license. Miss any one and the reservation is charged 100% with no car handed over.

Pickup — how the free shuttle actually works

Naha Airport does not have a rental counter for Lightmarks. Here is the actual sequence:

  1. Land at Naha Airport (OKA), clear baggage, exit to the arrivals hall.
  2. Send a message to Lightmarks via LINE or SMS to let them know you have arrived. The confirmation email from GO!GO!TOUR includes the contact.
  3. Wait about 15 minutes for the shuttle to depart.
  4. Free shuttle, about a 10-minute ride to the Lightmarks branch at 4-6-1 Kanagusuku, Naha.
  5. Paperwork, walk-around, and you’re out with a fully charged Tesla.

Lightmarks Naha branch — pickup point 10 minutes from Naha Airport by free shuttle, open 08:00–20:00 daily

Alternative: if you’re doing an airport-to-hotel first day and want to pick up the Tesla only on day two, ask GO!GO!TOUR to arrange the Akamine Station pickup option (Yui Rail monorail station near the branch). Convenient if you’re staying in Naha city.

Driving a Tesla in Okinawa — what’s different from the U.S.

For most English-speaking Tesla drivers this is the section that saves the day. Three specific things:

1. Drive on the left, from the right-hand seat. Japan drives on the left. Lightmarks’ Model 3 and Model Y are the Japanese-market right-hand-drive version, so if you’re used to a U.S.-spec left-hand-drive Tesla, everything is mirrored — driver’s seat on the right, turn signals on the left stalk (Tesla keeps the stalk on the same side of the column regardless of market), oncoming traffic passes on your right. Take a slow lap around the branch parking lot before merging onto Route 58.

2. Autopilot behaves the same, but roads are narrower. Basic Autopilot works on Okinawa’s expressway (the Okinawa Jidoshado) and Route 58. Don’t use it on the narrow coastal roads north of Nago, in and around the U.S. military base perimeters, or in central Naha’s back streets. Lane markings fade, and the assist can misread the shoulder.

3. The in-car navigation is in Japanese / Korean, not English. This is the one honest limitation. The Tesla’s built-in map does not display English POI names. Bring your smartphone with Google Maps set to English — mount it and use the Tesla’s Bluetooth for audio. Most travelers do this anyway; just plan for it before you drive off.

One-pedal driving works exactly as it does at home — Hold mode engaged, lift to slow. On Okinawa’s rolling coastal roads it feels great once you adapt to the narrower lanes.

Charging — you probably won’t need to

This is the part that makes Lightmarks unusual: you get the car at 100%, and you don’t need to charge before returning. They handle it. For a typical 24- to 48-hour Okinawa itinerary, the Model 3’s real-world 430 km range is more than enough to cover:

  • Naha → Cape Hedo (northern tip) round trip: about 260 km
  • Naha → Churaumi Aquarium round trip: about 200 km
  • A full central-Okinawa day (Naha → American Village → Cape Manzamo → back): about 150 km

If you want to top up anyway — for peace of mind or a longer itinerary — here is what’s on the island now:

  • Tesla Supercharger (V3, 3 stalls) — opened February 27, 2026 at FamilyMart Naha Ameku, about 15 minutes from the airport on Route 58. Okinawa’s first Supercharger.
  • AEON MALL Rycom — 4 × 45 kW CHAdeMO + 14 × 3 kW AC. Zero wait, and you get to shop while charging.
  • Ryukyu Nissan Chatan / Nago branches — 45 kW CHAdeMO. Convenient stopover on the way to American Village or Churaumi.
  • Ikei SA (Okinawa Expressway) — DC fast charger with an ocean view on a clear day.

For CHAdeMO stations you can use Tesla’s included J1772-to-CHAdeMO adapter (ask at pickup if it’s in the car). The point is: on a typical Okinawa trip you’ll return the car without ever plugging in.

Who this is (and isn’t) for

If you already drive a Tesla and want the same interface in Okinawa without gas-station stops, Lightmarks is the smoothest option on the island. The full-charge hand-over removes almost every EV-rental friction point.

Skip it if you fall into one of these:

  • You need a specific model or color — Lightmarks assigns whatever is on the lot.
  • You want English in-car navigation — the built-in map isn’t English. Use your phone.
  • You don’t have (or can’t get) a Geneva Convention IDP — no car will be released.
  • You need to seat six or more — Model 3 / Y are 5-seat only.

For everyone else, the math is straightforward: ¥15,000 (~$100) for 24 hours of a fully-charged Tesla, on an island small enough that you rarely need to plug in.

Wrap-Up — A Tesla, a full battery, and a small island — book the airport shuttle and go

Lightmarks EV Rental removes the two things that make EV rentals abroad stressful: finding a charger, and hoping the car is charged when you get it. They hand you a 100% battery and take care of the rest. On an island where you can circle the entire perimeter in a day, that’s exactly the right product.

Book the K1215 plan through GO!GO!TOUR — the ¥15,000 / 24h rate holds as long as you agree to post one Tesla photo with #OkinawaTesla during your rental.

Final checklist before you fly:

  • [ ] IDP in 1949 Geneva Convention paper-booklet format (arrange in your home country)
  • [ ] Home country driver’s license (physical, not digital)
  • [ ] Passport
  • [ ] Credit card used for the pre-payment
  • [ ] LINE app installed (easiest way to message the Lightmarks shuttle)
  • [ ] Google Maps set to English on your phone, plus a car mount

FAQ — Quick Answers

Q. How much does it cost to rent a Tesla in Okinawa?
A. On GO!GO!TOUR, the featured K1215 plan is ¥15,000 (about $100) for 24 hours, all charging included. The Standard plan is ¥11,200 and the Off-Season plan is ¥15,680.

Q. Do I need an International Driving Permit?
A. Yes — and specifically the 1949 Geneva Convention paper-booklet format. AAA (U.S.), CAA (Canada), and most European / UK / Australian IDPs qualify. Arrange it before you fly; Japan does not issue IDPs to visitors.

Q. Where do I pick up the car?
A. Not at Naha Airport directly. You message Lightmarks via LINE or SMS on arrival, wait about 15 minutes, then take the free shuttle (about 10 minutes) to the branch at 4-6-1 Kanagusuku, Naha.

Q. Can I choose Model 3 or Model Y specifically?
A. No. The plan assigns whichever car is on the lot, so both model and color are random.

Q. Do I need to charge the car before returning it?
A. No. The car is handed to you at 100% and returned as-is — no top-up required. Lightmarks handles charging on their end.

Q. Is there a Tesla Supercharger in Okinawa?
A. Yes, as of February 27, 2026 — three V3 stalls at FamilyMart Naha Ameku, about 15 minutes from the airport. For a typical Okinawa itinerary you probably won’t need it.

Q. Is the in-car navigation in English?
A. No. The built-in map interface is in Japanese and Korean. Bring your smartphone with Google Maps in English and connect via Bluetooth for audio.

Q. What happens if I cancel?
A. Free up to 7 days before pickup, then 20% (6–3 days), 30% (2 days to day before), and 100% on the day of pickup.
