Snorkeling in Okinawa
SnorkelingSnorkeling

Snorkeling — The easiest way in

Wearing a mask, snorkel, life jacket, fins and wetsuit, you float at the surface and look down into the sea. It is the simplest and safest marine activity here: no certification, just a short briefing and you are in. Okinawa has three headline spots — the Blue Cave, the Kerama Islands and Minna Island — and where you go changes the experience considerably.

Experience Diving — Underwater without a license

You wear a regulator, mask, wetsuit and tank and dive in a shallow, controlled area. No certification is required and an instructor stays beside you throughout, so weak swimmers can still take part. Unlike snorkeling you go under the surface, which feels entirely different. If you have a strong fear of water or of enclosed spaces, talk to us before booking.

Fun Diving — Proper scuba for Open Water and up

Scuba diving for holders of an Open Water certification or higher. Compared with experience diving you choose your own depth, range and time: Open Water goes to 18 m, higher specialties to 40 m. A dive runs around 40 minutes. You follow the instructor, but safety is also on you and your buddy.

Sea walking in Okinawa
Sea WalkingSea Walking

Sea Walking — A stroll on the seabed with a dry face

You wear a special helmet and a wetsuit and walk along the seabed. Air is fed into the helmet continuously, so your face stays dry and no seawater gets into your eyes or mouth. You can keep glasses or contact lenses on, and an instructor goes with you — which makes it a favorite with non-swimmers, children, and anyone who would rather not redo their makeup.

Glass BoatGlass Boat

Glass Boat — Coral reef without getting in

A sightseeing boat with a transparent glass or acrylic hull. You stay seated and look down at coral and tropical fish, so nothing gets wet and there is no need to change into swimwear. It is the safest pick when traveling with older relatives or very young children who cannot snorkel or dive, and the clear hull makes for easy photos and video.

Parasailing in Okinawa
ParasailingParasailing

Parasailing — A walk in the sky, no water involved

You fly under a parachute towed by a boat. Since you never actually enter the water, travelers who are nervous about the sea often find it easier than snorkeling. Minimum age is 4, and the upper limit is a generous 65–80 depending on the operator. Weight limits do usually apply — commonly 30 kg minimum per person and 140 kg combined for two — so check before booking.

Kayaking in Okinawa
KayakingKayaking

Kayaking — Exploring nature at water level

You paddle a small boat through the sea, rivers and mangrove forest. Unlike a large vessel your eyes sit almost at water level, which makes it feel like a walk through nature. No real strength or technique is needed — learn the basic stroke and you are off. Two-seaters let you paddle with a child, which is why families book it so often.

Paddle boarding in Okinawa
Paddle BoardPaddle Board

Paddle Board — Stand up or sit down, your call

SUP (stand-up paddle boarding) means propelling a board with a paddle. The board is larger and thicker than a surfboard so it floats well, and non-swimmers can join. If balancing feels shaky you can simply sit and paddle like a kayak. Cruising, yoga, fishing and racing are all done on SUP, so plans within this one category can differ quite a lot.

Beach activities in Okinawa
Beach ActivitiesBeach Activities

Beach Activities — A plan that fills the whole day

More than swimming: sandcastles, beach volleyball, banana boats and snorkeling bundled into one plan. If you are with children or older relatives, first check that the beach has parking, changing rooms and showers, that lifeguards are on duty, and that a jellyfish net is in place. At 3–8 hours these plans are long, so block out the day.

Whale watching in Okinawa
Whale WatchingWhale Watching

Whale Watching — Only in an Okinawan winter

From late December to early April, humpback whales leave the cold waters off Alaska and Siberia for warm Okinawa to give birth and raise their calves. Large individuals reach about 30 tonnes and 11–15 m. From the boat you see breaching, blows and fluke movements. February and March give the best chance of an encounter. The winter north wind makes it feel cold on deck, so bring warm layers and seasickness tablets (taken an hour before departure).

Sunset cruise in Okinawa
CruiseCruise

Cruise — Scenery, dinner and the occasion, all on board

Enjoy the view from the cabin alongside a meal or a show. In Okinawa these split into four kinds: activity cruises that hop between spots and include snorkeling, underwater-view boats that show you the reef without getting in, anniversary cruises for birthdays and weddings, and sunset cruises that depart at dusk. No preparation or skill required.

Sea fishing in Okinawa
FishingFishing

Fishing — May to August for beginners, November to January for size

You head out by boat and fish while looking over the emerald water. Okinawan waters are clear and rich in species, so beginners get bites, and there are plenty of spots off Ishigaki and Miyako as well as the main island. It runs all year, but bites are best May–August, while November–January is when you go for size. We only list plans where a professional guide picks the spot.

Street kart and buggy in Okinawa
Street Kart / BuggyStreet Kart / Buggy

Street Kart & Buggy — You need an international permit

Street karts are small go-karts driven on public roads; buggies are off-road vehicles that tackle mountain tracks and unpaved ground. People book them for the costumes and the photos. In Japan, driving a street kart on public roads requires an International Driving Permit (IDP). Buggies confined to private land do not need a license, but any course that includes a road section does.

One-day Coach Tour — The sights in a day, without a rental car

Public transport is thin in Okinawa, so this is the realistic option if you are not renting a car. Departing Naha, a single day links Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island, Manzamo and American Village. There is no driving stress and no itinerary to build, and many courses come with a guide. Note that including travel time these run 3–10 hours, which varies a lot by course.

Tour Taxi / TransferTour Taxi / Transfer

Tour Taxi & Transfer — A private car that follows your plan

You charter a vehicle with a driver who doubles as your guide. Unlike an ordinary taxi the route flexes around your schedule, and a driver who knows the island will show you the sights. Places that are awkward to reach on public transport, or that you would rather not visit alone, become easy. At 2–10 hours you can book anything from half a day to a full one.

Private Bus — Group travel on your own itinerary

A chartered coach with a dedicated driver. Unlike a one-day coach tour that follows a fixed route, you decide the stops, the waypoints and the timing. It covers group sightseeing as well as school trips, company offsites, wedding shuttles, inspections and sports events. Because the quote depends on group size and route, booking starts with a conversation.
