You can reach the summit by ropeway or car, and it's worth going up around dusk to enjoy both the daytime and nighttime views.

Question 5

Accepted Answer

Gunkanjima (Hashima) is an uninhabited island that once thrived as an undersea coal mine before being abandoned, and it's registered as a World Heritage site among Meiji-era industrial heritage. It's called "Battleship Island" because it looks like a warship from a distance. You can't visit on your own—only via landing-and-cruise tours departing from Nagasaki Port. You can reach it by JR from central Nagasaki, and it's spacious enough to fill a whole day, making it a beloved destination for families and couples.

Question 7

Accepted Answer

When it comes to Nagasaki food, Nagasaki champon—a rich broth packed with seafood and vegetables—is the headliner. Sara udon (crispy noodles topped with a thick sauce), Turkish rice (a plate combining several Western dishes), and kakuni-manju (steamed buns filled with tender braised pork) are local specialties too. For dessert, you can't miss castella, Nagasaki's famous sponge cake.

Question 8

Do I need a rental car in Nagasaki Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

Central Nagasaki is easy to explore by tram and on foot, so for a city-focused trip you'll be comfortable without a rental car. With its many hills and narrow streets, public transport is often the more convenient option. That said, a rental car helps if you want to combine outlying areas like Unzen and Shimabara or enjoy a flexible itinerary. Huis Ten Bosch and Gunkanjima can be reached by JR and tour boat respectively, so you can visit them without a car.
