Question 1

How many days are ideal for a trip to Miyazaki Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

Miyazaki is long from north to south, so getting around takes time; one night is the basic plan for touring Miyazaki city and the Aoshima/Nichinan coast, while reaching northern Takachiho or Cape Toi in the far south calls for two nights. Takachiho, the "land of myths," is far from the city, so it's popular to treat it as a separate base or combine it with Kumamoto and Aso. Focusing on one area makes for a fuller trip.

Question 2

When is the best time to visit Miyazaki Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

With its southern, tropical feel, Miyazaki is mild year-round, but spring and autumn are especially comfortable. Summer is lively with the swimming and surfing season, while Takachiho is beautiful with autumn foliage. February brings pro baseball spring training, and from May to July you can enjoy the famous local mangoes—each season has its own appeal.

Question 3

What kind of place is Takachiho Gorge?

Accepted Answer

Takachiho Gorge is a cliff-lined ravine carved out of Aso volcanic lava, and one of Miyazaki's signature scenic spots. The highlight is Manai Falls, one of Japan's 100 famous waterfalls, which you can approach by rowboat. The area is said to be a stage of Japanese mythology—the "land of myths"—so it's worth pairing with the night kagura dance at Takachiho Shrine and Amano Iwato Shrine.

Question 4

What are the must-visit attractions in Miyazaki Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

Among things to do in Miyazaki, Aoshima—an island ringed by the rock formations known as the "Devil's Washboard"—and Aoshima Shrine, famous for matchmaking, are top picks. Udo Jingu, set in a coastal cave where you descend stairs to worship, Sun Messe Nichinan with its row of Moai statues, and a drive along the phoenix-palm-lined Nichinan coast are also popular. In the city, the sunset from Heiwadai Park is beautiful.

Question 5

What food must I try in Miyazaki Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

When it comes to Miyazaki food, the top-grade Miyazaki beef—which won first place at the "Wagyu Olympics"—is the headliner. Chicken nanban (which originated in Miyazaki), served with sweet-vinegar sauce and tartar, and charcoal-grilled local jidori chicken are local specialties too. For dessert, you can't miss Miyazaki mango, known as the "Egg of the Sun."

Question 6

What activities can I enjoy in Miyazaki Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

Miyazaki is one of Japan's premier surfing destinations; with few calm days, the Aoshima and Nichinan coast areas can be enjoyed year-round by everyone from beginners to advanced surfers. Beyond sea swimming and marine leisure like SUP, power-spot pilgrimages in the "land of myths" Takachiho and nature experiences such as the Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge are also popular.

Question 7

Do I need a rental car in Miyazaki Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

You can get around Miyazaki city and the Aoshima area by JR and bus, but Miyazaki is long from north to south, with attractions like Takachiho and the Nichinan coast spread far apart, so a rental car makes touring much easier. The phoenix-palm-lined Nichinan coast and the road toward Takachiho are routes where the drive itself is a pleasure. For wide-ranging touring or a flexible itinerary, a rental car is recommended.

Question 8

How do I get to Miyazaki Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

Since no Shinkansen runs to Miyazaki, flying is the most convenient option. Miyazaki Airport is close to the city—about 10 minutes to Miyazaki Station by JR. From Fukuoka it's about 4 hours 30 minutes by highway bus (the Phoenix-go), and combining a drive from Kagoshima or Kumamoto to tour southern Kyushu is also a good plan. Takachiho is conveniently reached from the Kumamoto and Aso side as well.
