Question 1

How many days are ideal for a trip to Kumamoto Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

For a Kumamoto itinerary, one night is the basic plan for touring Kumamoto Castle, the city, and Mount Aso, while two nights let you add Kurokawa Onsen or Amakusa. Kumamoto is close to Fukuoka by Shinkansen, so a day trip or one-night visit centered on Kumamoto Castle is also popular. Since the attractions are spread out, planning a route that links the city, Aso, and an onsen makes for a fuller trip.

Question 2

When is the best time to visit Kumamoto Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

The best time to visit Kumamoto is early summer to summer, when Aso's grasslands are lush green, and the autumn foliage season (Kikuchi Gorge and Suizenji). In spring, the cherry blossoms at Kumamoto Castle and Aso's controlled field burning (noyaki) are spectacular, and in winter the Kurokawa Onsen "Yuakari" lantern event (late December to late March) is full of atmosphere. It's a destination with distinct seasonal charms.

Question 3

Can I still visit Kumamoto Castle after the earthquake?

Accepted Answer

Yes—Kumamoto Castle was badly damaged in the 2016 earthquake, but the main keep (tenshukaku) was fully restored and reopened in 2021, with renewed exhibits and views from the top floor. As one of Japan's three great castles, it offers a unique experience right now: you can see the ongoing restoration as a "visible recovery." Full restoration of the whole castle is a long-term project, and you can tour it via special routes such as the elevated walkway.

Question 4

What should I see at Mount Aso?

Accepted Answer

Mount Aso is one of the world's largest calderas, and its endless grassland scenery is breathtaking. Highlights include the wide-open Kusasenri grassland, the Daikanbo viewpoint, and the Nakadake crater, which opens depending on volcanic activity. Nearby, it's also worth visiting Nabegataki Falls—where you can walk behind the waterfall—and Shirakawa Suigen, famous for its spring water.

Question 5

Which hot springs are best in Kumamoto Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

Kumamoto's signature hot spring is Kurokawa Onsen, nestled in the mountains of Aso. The whole town is designed as if it were a single ryokan, giving it a charming atmosphere, and with a "nyuto tegata" pass you can choose three open-air baths for a bath-hopping tour. Paired with the winter "Yuakari," when bamboo lanterns light up the streets, it's even more special.

Question 6

What food must I try in Kumamoto Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

When it comes to Kumamoto food, basashi (fresh horse-meat sashimi) is the headliner. Rich Kumamoto ramen flavored with fragrant garlic oil, spicy karashi renkon (mustard lotus root), and taipien (glass-noodle soup) are local specialties too. Be sure to try Aso akaushi (red wagyu beef) as a steak or rice bowl, and the local dago-jiru dumpling soup.

Question 7

Do I need a rental car in Kumamoto Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

Kumamoto Castle and the city are easy enough to explore by Shinkansen and the tram (streetcar). That said, appealing spots like Mount Aso, Kurokawa Onsen, Nabegataki Falls, and Amakusa are spread out, so if you want to take those areas in too, having a rental car makes getting around much smoother and your route more flexible. In fact, a popular plan is to arrive at Kumamoto Station from Fukuoka by Shinkansen, then pick up a rental car and head to Aso and Kurokawa. For a city-focused trip, public transport is fine; to range more widely to Aso and the onsen, a rental car is recommended.

Question 8

What is the best itinerary for a family trip to Kumamoto Prefecture?

Accepted Answer

A Kumamoto family trip pairs well with Kumamon Square, where you can meet the popular mascot Kumamon, and the wide grasslands and farm experiences of Aso. Animal-friendly spots like Aso Farm Land and Cuddly Dominion, and dolphin-watching tours in Amakusa, are popular with kids too. As the attractions are far apart, getting around by rental car makes it easy to explore even with children.
