Doing all seven eats 3 to 4 hours and several of the pools look similar enough that the last few feel repetitive.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re picking three, the photogenic winners are <strong>Umi Jigoku (the sea hell), Chinoike Jigoku (the blood pond hell) and Tatsumaki Jigoku (the geyser hell)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id='what-beppu-jigoku-meguri-actually-is'  id=\"boomdevs_2\" id=\"what-beppu-jigoku-meguri-actually-is\" >What Beppu Jigoku Meguri actually is<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Jigoku&#8221; is the local word for the patches of ground around Beppu where boiling water and steam have been erupting for over a thousand years. Farmers couldn&#8217;t work them, travellers couldn&#8217;t cross them, and the name \u2014 hell \u2014 stuck.<\/p>\n<p>Today the seven most dramatic spots have been fenced, landscaped and turned into walkable viewing gardens under the collective name Beppu Jigoku Meguri.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en.gogo-tour.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/beppu-jigoku-meguri_3.jpg\" alt=\"Beppu Jigoku Meguri combo pass information board\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The seven hells split into two clusters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kannawa cluster (5 hells)<\/strong> \u2014 close enough to walk between<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kamegawa cluster (2 hells)<\/strong> \u2014 about 3 km further north, need a car or bus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most common question we get is &#8220;Can I get in the water?&#8221; The answer is no \u2014 <span class=\"__text_accent1\">the Jigoku are viewing attractions only<\/span>. This is where most photos of &#8220;Beppu hells&#8221; you&#8217;ve seen online were taken, and it&#8217;s the one you&#8217;ll want to spend the most time at.<\/p>\n<h3 id='2-oniishibozu-jigoku-the-bubbling-mud-hell'  id=\"boomdevs_5\" id=\"2-oniishibozu-jigoku-the-bubbling-mud-hell\" >2. Inside a single garden you&#8217;ll find <strong>six different sub-hells<\/strong> with different colours, temperatures and textures, so this is the best value for a short visit.<\/p>\n<p>There are also hands-on features \u2014 foot baths, steam inhalation, hot spring drinking \u2014 that make it the most fun stop if you&#8217;re travelling with kids.<\/p>\n<h3 id='4-oniyama-jigoku-the-crocodile-hell'  id=\"boomdevs_7\" id=\"4-oniyama-jigoku-the-crocodile-hell\" >4. The source water arrives at over 100 \u00b0C, so the bath uses a traditional bamboo cooling structure called &#8220;Yuamedake&#8221; to bring it down to bathing temperature naturally, without adding any water.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll find large indoor baths, an outdoor rotenburo, a waterfall bath, a sand bath and a steam sauna. It&#8217;s the obvious place to unwind after the Jigoku loop.<\/p>\n<h3 id='kannawa-mushiyu'  id=\"boomdevs_17\" id=\"kannawa-mushiyu\" >Kannawa Mushiyu<\/h3>\n<p>A traditional herbal steam bath run by Beppu City. You lie on a bed of medicinal sekisho leaves inside a stone chamber and let the geothermal steam do the work. Picking up a car at Oita Airport or JR Beppu Station is the easiest way to open up the rest of the region \u2014 Yufuin, Mt.
