Say “northern Okinawa” and everyone thinks of the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium<\/strong>. But here’s what most visitors don’t realize: the aquarium is just one paid building inside a huge public park called Ocean Expo Park (\u6d77\u6d0b\u535a\u516c\u5712)<\/strong> \u2014 and the dolphin show, manatee and sea-turtle pools, and Emerald Beach are all completely free.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

This guide is about exactly that \u2014 enjoying Ocean Expo Park without paying to go inside the aquarium.<\/span> We didn’t buy an aquarium ticket this time, and honestly, the free attractions alone easily filled the better part of a day. (Ticket info is at the end if you do want to go in.)<\/p>\n\n

One catch: the Motobu Peninsula has very thin public transport \u2014 about a 2-hour drive from Naha Airport \u2014 so a rental car is essentially the only comfortable way here. What Is Ocean Expo Park? \u2014 The Aquarium Is Only Part of It<\/h3>\n\n\"Exterior\n\n

Ocean Expo Park<\/strong> is a large national park built for the 1975 International Ocean Exposition. However, the Churaumi Aquarium is just the one ticketed building<\/span> \u2014 most of the rest of the park is free and open to wander.<\/p>\n\n

    In other words, even without an aquarium ticket, you can watch the dolphin show, meet the manatees and turtles, and hit the beach. For budget travelers or families with little kids, this “free version” is genuinely great value.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

    Getting There \u2014 ~2 Hours From Naha, Free Parking<\/h3>\n\n

    \nFrom Naha Airport:<\/strong> about 2 hours by car (~90 km) via the Okinawa Expressway, exiting at Kyoda IC

    The aquarium and dolphin theater are at the northern, seaside end<\/strong> of a very large park. The closest lot is the “P7 North Gate.”<\/span> Set your GPS to “Ocean Expo Park P7” (or the aquarium’s phone number, 0980-48-3748) so you don’t park a 15-minute walk away.<\/p>\n\n\"Whale-shark-painted\n\n

    The park is big enough that walking from the car to the seaside and back can wear you out. The whale-shark-painted electric shuttle cart<\/span> links the ticket gate, beach and main facilities for around \u00a5100 a ride \u2014 a lifesaver with small kids or on a hot day.<\/p>\n\n
