No Naha itinerary skips Shuri Castle (Shurijo)<\/strong>, the royal palace of the old Ryukyu Kingdom. But most visitors picture it as “buy a ticket, see the main hall.” In reality, Shuri Castle Park has a large free zone<\/b> \u2014 you can wander the stone walls, ponds, and hilltop viewpoints without a ticket, morning or evening. What is Shuri Castle? \u2014 450 years at the heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom<\/h3>\n

From 1429 to 1879 \u2014 roughly 450 years<\/b> \u2014 Shuri Castle was the political, diplomatic, and cultural center of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It looks nothing like a mainland Japanese castle. Its magic is a distinctly Ryukyuan style that blends Chinese, Japanese, and Southeast Asian influences<\/b>: scarlet tiles, dragon carvings, and vivid color found nowhere else in Japan.<\/p>\n

In 2000, the Shuri Castle site was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.”<\/strong> Strictly speaking, it’s the stone walls and remains<\/b> that hold World Heritage status; the burned-and-rebuilt main hall itself is a reconstruction. Knowing that, a free stroll along the ramparts is literally walking on a World Heritage site.<\/p>\n

The 2019 fire and the 2026 reconstruction \u2014 a “only right now” moment<\/h3>\n

In the early hours of October 31, 2019, the Seiden and several buildings were lost to fire. Since then, Okinawa has rebuilt under a theme of “reconstruction on show,”<\/b> deliberately letting visitors watch the work as it happens.<\/p>\n
